Their fìekl of operation is more estensive than that of the Government, and, besides general drainage, comprehends many improvements not contempla-ted by Government. Finally, the compauies execute other works required by the land owuers, which is for many a great advantage.
The oldest of these compauies, the General Land Drainage and Improvement Company, execute the following improvements:
1. Ali works of drainage and irrigation, warping, and embankiug.
2. The erection of farm-houses, cottages for agricultural labourers, aud ali kinds of farm buildings.
3. The construction of roads.
4. The grubbing and clearing of old woodlands and fences, and the execution of ali works necessary for reclai-ming, enclosing, and otherwise permanently improving land.
Another company, known under the title of « The West of England and South Wales Land Draining Company », executes the following works, provided that they are to the benefit of agriculture:

Tile-sheds;
Tile-yards;
Rrick-kilns;
Brich-yards;
Buildings;
